Free FMS

FMS is a freeware RC simluator for anyone to use. It's not quite as user friendly as or have as many features as the comercial ones avaialbe right now, but it does work with a 4 axis joystick and the transmitter interface is as easy to build as twisting some wires together.

The flight charecteristics with the transmiter interface are quite good. They're actually on par with the commercial sims which cost 100-250 dollars - hovering, forward flight and aerobatics all felt natural.

Here is the official FMS website and the FMS discussion forum.

This program is designed for people who have good 3d video cards, such as TNT2 or Voodoo based cards, it uses the Direct-3D platform for graphics.

Be sure to delete any previus installation before installing a new version.

Here is a direct link to download the German version of FMS on the official FMS web site.

Armature Add-on Models

First, you should know that this simulator is compatible with Aerofly add-on models. Many free Aerofly models can be downloaded from www.higgy.de.

Victor has created a new model for FMS and you can download the Free Pod / Boom helicopter model from his site.

Note: To load any model, including the ones that come with the game, after you select load-model you must brows through your directory and tell it where they're installed. The default would be c:\program files\fms\modell\ but of course, it will be where ever you installed it to. Cobra and ThreeDee are both helicopters, the rest are airplanes.

Joystick Sub Menu (Tested on Sidewinder 3d Pro)

Use as input device (Checked)
Heck = Rudder = 4
Nick = Elevator = 2
Pitch = Collective/Power = 3
Roll = Aileron = 1

In order for the transmitter (not joystick) interface to work, your transmitter must be in standard FM mode (NOT PCM) and your parallel port must be set to use Printer Port IRQ 7 and I/O Port 378h. This is the default setting used on most computers. Also, this is NOT what FMS defaults to, you must manually set the lpt port to 378 inside the fms transmitter settings for it to work.

Here are some instructions to build the transmitter interface for futba, jr and most other remotes.
